As you may know, today is the summer solstice! It’s the longest day of the year, boasting an additional 6 hours and 31 minutes of additional daylight compared to this day in December.
In honour of celebrating the summer’s official start date, we thought we’d share a list of ways to celebrate right here in Toronto. BONUS: most things on this list are free, nourishing + grounding. What better way to kick off the summer than with a little bit of extra intention?
1. Head to Toronto Island: Take a quick ferry ride to Toronto Island + play tourist for the afternoon. Take in the views, rent a bike, have a casual picnic, or simply relax + take some deep breaths on one of the beaches away from the regular hustle + bustle of Toronto’s regular scene. Watch the sunset over the city + allow yourself to feel far away.
2. Wander through High Park: Take advantage of Toronto’s beautiful trails, gardens, and even meander through the petting zoo for some child-like fun. Spend some time connecting with nature, pause for a meditation (or cold beverage) by Grenadier Pond, or walk with a friend to catch up + connect. Spend the extra hours of sunlight today finding gratitude for where you live, with people you love.
3. Visit Edwards Gardens: What better way to spend the summer solstice than stopping to smell the roses! Literally. This is a serene (and unexpected) spot to celebrate the extra sunlight and enjoy the simple beauty of nature.
4. Sunset at Scarborough Bluffs: The Scarborough Bluffs offer breathtaking views of Lake Ontario and make for an epic spot to witness the summer solstice sunset. Pack a charcuterie board to go, bring a cozy blanket, and enjoy the panoramic views as the sun sets over the water. Bonus points if you leave your phone in the car + “forget to take photos”.
5. Participate in Outdoor Yoga or Meditation Events: Look out for outdoor yoga or meditation events happening in Toronto today. Many yoga studios, parks, and community organizations will be hosting special sessions to honor the solstice. Practicing yoga or meditation outdoors during this auspicious time can create a serene and rejuvenating experience for you to set intentions for the summer ahead.
6. Keep it Simple + Enjoy a Healthy Meal Outdoors: Head to your favourite eatery that prioritizes local, seasonal ingredients, and enjoy a nourishing meal while soaking up the summer solstice ambiance.
At the end of the day, honouring the summer solstice doesn’t require you to get fancy or party like it’s 1999. But here’s the truth: a memorable summer won’t happen by accident. What are 10 things you want to experience this summer? Perhaps during one of your walks, or while on a picnic with a friend, you can set aside time to get intentional about what summer 2023 will look like for you.
However you spend your time today, we hope it nourishes you in the exact way you need.
